COME PLANT!
Ever wonder where those flowers in the tree pits along 76th Street come from? Every year, we close the street to traffic for a day and spiff up the block for spring. We buy flats of impatiens, ivy and other greenery, and big bags of peat moss and planting soil. We sweep the sidewalks and clean out the tree pits, and lovingly lay in the plants. Then we stand back and admire our handiwork and have a picnic/barbecue in front of the schoolyard. The plants make our block a more inviting place; this year’s blooms lasted past Thanksgiving. The SPRING PLANTING AND CLEAN-UP DAY is usually held in early May.
